4.2.2012 Another First for Chapter Six
– Boronia
Over The Mountains Anniversary Omeo Ride 2.3.2012
The ride started with a Chapter Six AA Meeting on Thursday 1.3.2012. Some of the group’s riders and family members camped over at some Shepparton member’s places.
A barbeque breakfast at Gary Ws place on Friday morning gave members a chance to meet and interact with riders before the ride. Army Ron gave the group of riders a good talking to about riding safely.
The riders in the group that left Shepparton were – Ron E, Syd H, Reg, Sue, Peter W, Tamara, Kerion, Reg also had his young son Darby on behind him. Gary B had the bear on the front of his bike and I Gary W made up the group. Glen and Helen took turns in driving the backup ute that was supplied by Reg. Bev, Ron E’s wife followed on in her little car with some of the goodies needed for the ride.
Everyone had their wet weather gear on, and that came in handy. The group encountered water over the road between Shepparton and Euroa in different places, and the gum boots, the only wet weather boots came in very handy.
Gaetan from Tallarook joined the group at Euroa on the big 1600. In no time flat we were at Merton and then down to Healesville where Rod, with his young son Ben on behind him. Shane, John W on his Harley and Ron J all from Geelong joined us.
After a good feed at the bakery we were all on our way again through some great looking countryside and winding roads. Just as were about to hit the Gippsland highway, John had a mishap on his bike. John and his bike were looked after very well and the group moved onto Traralgon for their night stopover.
We all had a great feed at the local bowls club and after that some riders went to the local AA Meeting and those who needed rest, made their way back to the caravan park.
The bowls club gave us a big welcome; we have made a little name for ourselves at that club. Greg and Vanessa from Geelong caught up with us at the caravan park late that night.
Dirk from Cockatoo joined us while we having breakfast at Macca’s in Traralgon, the ride from Traralgon down through Sale to Lakes Entrance was done in the rain and went without a hitch. Frank from Omeo and Linda met with us and joined us for lunch. Paul also came to meet us on his Yamaha, he and his wife also lunched with us.
Frank, with Linda on behind him led us up the mountain to Omeo. I had a little mishap with my trailer on the way; it ran off the road and shook my bike around a little. Bev, who was behind me in her car came over the radio and said gee Gary, you nearly lost it all there.
I pulled over and got bit of composure and a smoke and caught up with the group at Bruthen, where they were all waiting and resting. We arrived at Omeo safe and made our way to the caravan park where Ron had us all booked in for our stay.
Tom and his wife arrived today and it was good to see Tom. We all cleaned up
and had a meal and some rode to the meeting.
Frank ran a shuttle service of us to his meeting; Frank and Linda made everyone most welcome. Eats were put on by Frank and Linda to make way for a very relaxed meeting that finished right on time. I counted some 24 members at the meeting. Frank drove most of us back to the caravan park and we all, or most of us slept well. Tom also drove members to and from the meeting in his car.
On Sunday Frank escorted us on a tour around and up to a local lookout and other places of interest. Bev prepared food and salads for a barbi with Gary B and Gary W helping with the cooking. The poker run was worked out and Reg won first place.
Reg's son came second and Syd came third. The raffle was drawn - Sue first, Dirk second and Bev third. Glen did a fantastic job of running the poker run, Glen put a lot of effort into the drawing of cards and kept everything in order. It takes a lot of work to fill out who got what, and when the draws were made. Good on you Glen.
There was singing and guitar playing around the fire with lots of laughter and happy people. One of the local farmers bought us around some vegies and so forth, while spending some time chatting with one another about different things.
The Spiritual Concept Meeting that was held on Sunday morning was another first for Chapter Six. The meeting was well attended and at times very moving.
The group had a listener, very interested in our meeting for her own needs, what ever they may be. I was asked to chair the meeting and I invited Ron E to do it with me. There were some statements that bought smiles to our faces.
On Monday Ron led a ride down and up the mountain, and the one and only Shifty from Stanley rode up the mountain and joined us.-----------------------------
Tuesday morning we were all up early and packed up ready for the ride down the mountain. We all met at the bakery and left from there.
It was a hassle free ride down the mountain, stopping briefly at dinner plains for a break and to view the heavy fog lifting.
A light feed at Bright and we were all on our way again till we hit the Beechworth turnoff, that is where we said good bye to Ron and Bev.
While Steve, Reg, Sue, Tamara, Kerion, Gary B and I rode to Beechworth, said good bye to Steve, and down the road a bit more Gary B and myself parted with Reg and Sue’s group and made our way to Cobram on the NSW side of the Murray River.
Some lighter stuff along and around the ride. It has been reported that a 1600 rider had a little snoring nap at the Traralgon meeting. This ride is hard going mate, rest when you can, aye.
I could not work out why the teddy was put outside Gary Bs hut to sleep. Gary B told me that he was being punished, because all day the bear was moving over and covering his blinker every time Gary put it on. Poor poo bear, I felt sorry for him, but Gary B knows what is good for him. At least Gary left the bears chapter six vest on him to keep the cold at bay.
The bear does not stick it into Gary for pulling up every 30ks for a wee wee stop. It is a contest between the two Gary’s who needs to go, go.
The starter motor fell over trying to push start Trevor’s bike. Who was the starter motor? Pushing Trev’s bike in the car park at Lakes? I think that there were two starter motors pushing Trev’s bike to start it.
It was decided that Sue would be entered into the books as some sort of Super-woman ? Bev was heard to say that when John came off his bike, Sue in the blink of an eye had left the vehicle sped across the road and leapt the concrete barrier with the speed of a bolt of lightning, great first aid skills Sue, job well done.
When we hit Bright for lunch , Sue went into the bakery and ordered a salad roll, the woman making it sliced through the roll and straight into her hand, I almost had to grab Sue to stop her from donning her super cape and leaping the bay-marie to assist the woman, ha ha,
I ran into a bit of water at Numurkah, cars would not have a go at it, till they saw the Qwakka make its way through. Those who know Gav, one of my friends met and rode through with me on his farm bike. I was wet up to my waist, and I can tell you all, I was worried at different spots.
The water was running very fast and at one stage the current started to take the trailer with it. There was water, deep in places all the way from Numurkah till One U. Don’t tell anyone, but the copper had just gone for lunch as Gav and I rode through. The old red Qwakka looked like a jet ski going through the water.
I never made it home till Wednesday around 3pm. I took the hard way and you will see the water I had to try and get through.
I made it, but I was wet from the waist down. The old bike never faltered, thank Christ.
Until next time eh Gary W

A LETTER FROM ONE OF OUR INDIGENOUS MEMBERS
Wotsanamee finds Chapter Six Clan of A.A. Tribe
Before I came out of the wilderness they called me Wotsanamee, which in my tongue means ‘truth seeker’.
In that jungle of darkness the members of my tribe followed the will of spirits who told us what to do, as if we were slaves and not common men.
When the AA messenger bought me to his tribe I found that I was but an ignorant child in the ways of living.
My new adopted people gave me a chance to find hope and how to grow within a loving tribe; a place where the spirits may not touch me if I am willing to follow the path set down by the tribe love.
Alas, many clans for the AA tribe were not enough for Wotsanamee, but this changed when I became a member of the Chapter Six Clan.
A nomadic warrior band, this clan loves nothing better than to dash wildly across the plains, en masse, and the roar of their charge is renowned.
They are known to travel great distances on their glistening steeds to visit sub clans.
Many members of other clans come to sit at these Chapter Six tribal councils, where all members have the right to be heard.
In this clan, as in all powerful tribes, the elders are not shunned. They are celebrated as the keepers of wisdom, which they freely pass on.
The elders show great joy as we grow, taking great care and patience to develop the individual who seeks their guidance, but they do not interfere with those who do not care to listen.
They are gentle and show compassion, for they remember the tribulations of their youth, but they are not beyond administering ‘tough love’ when called for, This is as it should be in a strong clan, where honesty is the cornerstone of survival.
Within Chapter Six all members, particularly the young, are protected and valued as it must be for their safety and chances of reaching the adult state.
There is no power of men over woman, for the experience of each and every individual is essential to the clan’s wellbeing.
In this clan a member has many fathers, brothers, mothers, and sisters. They rely on each other for their survival, sharing much laughter and joy, as well as pain and losers, equally. As with any tribal entity, there is no room for falsehoods or taking advantage of the inexperienced, and Chapter Six frowns upon these things.
It knows that strength comes from the truth, unity and reliance on each individual, and all are better for it.
The clan continues to thrive and prosper because its principles are valued more highly than the many personalities within it.
Thus I, Wotsanamee, have found safety in the collective haven of the Chapter Six Clan of the AA Tribe. I am taught to be wary of those who would talk the talk, and to be attentive to those who walk the walk, of which there are many in the clan.
It is here that I finally believe I am worthy, and that I have a chance to avoid the bedevilments of the evil spirits. For this I am truly grateful.
Wotsanamee.

Introduction to Riding with Chapter Six Motorcycle AA Group
F.O.B.
( Friends Of Bill )
. All AA members , family, and friends are welcome to join in on our ride’s, regardless of what make of motorcycle you ride.
. You ride with us entirely at your own risk, it is your responsibility to obtain your own insurance, ride in a proper and safe manner, and treat other riders with respect.
. We ask that you observe our Group Riding Procedure statement ( set out below ) to familiarise your-self with our riding procedures.
. We reserve the right to ask any person to leave the ride for :
. Acting in an inappropriate, or dangerous manner or
. Not following direction.
. All ride’s are not organised rides, they are an invitation only to join us, it is very important that you know that we are not a motorcycle club, we are a motorcycle AA group.
There are no fees or attendance obligations, nor is there any governance and politics that often comes with a structured approach – all we ask is that you be aware that the rides are nothing more than Friends of Bill ( F.O.B.) going for a ride and you are welcome to come if you can make it!
………………………………
Group Riding Procedure
· Keep your highest priority to wearing the appropriate proper Legal Protection Gear this applies to yourself and your pillion passenger - it is important that we minimise the possibility of injury to ourselve's or other's riding on the bike with us, by acting in a responsible way.
· For all rides there is a nominated Leader of the group. Do not overtake him or her.
· There is also a nominated Tail End Rider – on long trips also, there usually is a Back-up vehicle towing a trailer. Please stay in front of that vehicle.
· If you do not choose to ride the same pace as set by the Leader THAT’S O.K.! Just go at your own safe pace. We will never leave you behind – even if you are the last bike in front of the Tail End Rider, it doesn’t matter – we want you to enjoy your ride at a safe and comfortable speed.
· Those rider’s who feel the need to put the hammer down, will be given opportunity to ride ahead at nominated sections only.
· At any corner or intersection that is considered necessary to mark, the Leader will point to the left side of the road to indicate to the rider immediately behind the Leader to pull over as a Corner Marshall. Corner Marshalls are required to stay to the side of the road, before a corner, correct indicator flashing or if indicating to ride straight through an intersection should be after the corner on the side of the road (no indicator). Corner Marshalls are required to stay in their stationary position until Tail End Rider acknowledges to ride on. (Usually done by a headlight flash) If you do not wish to be a Corner Marshall – please do not ride immediately behind the Leader otherwise you will get the job!!!
· Ride in staggered formation, if the rider in front of you is on the top side of road , your position needs to be on the bottom side of road, or vice-versa, approx three bike lengths back ( depending on what speed you travelling at ) , ride this formation in groups of four, the next group of four should be approx two car lengths behind.
· Always signal your intentions to change lanes or position and keep a safe distance behind the rider in front. A three-second gap is considered adequate and safe. (What’s a three second gap??? The distance you cover in three seconds – the faster you are riding, the further the distance!!!) Always check in your mirrors and concentrate on your riding. Only overtake when you are totally sure there is room for you ahead to pass safely, NEVER pass another rider on the inside left.
· When riding with others, be aware of the dynamics of how the group moves along – overtaking riders to make your way up to the front can cause a sometimes dangerous and frustrating bottleneck at the front.
· The group as a whole should NOT stop for an individual as it can create an even more dangerous situation. If an emergency is apparent, we ask that only a small number of riders render assistance where they can. Tail End Rider’s responsibility is to assist any rider who has stopped. The Back –up Vehicle carries a comprehensive first aid kit.
Arrangements are made so that if further assistance is ever needed, there will be someone provided to do this. If individual riders are competent in rendering First Aid, their support in such a circumstance is highly important and these riders are encouraged to assist.
· To ensure smooth running fuel stops, please remember to do the following: at self-serve stations: fill your bike, push it out of the way, then pay for your petrol. Always park with adequate distance between your bike and others so that a domino-effect disaster is not likely to occur.
· On occasion, for reasons of rider safety and/or time constraints, we reserve the right to make changes to itineraries. We appreciate a flexible attitude and co-operation with regard to the rare changes when they may happen.
