Geelong’s Chapter Six Anniversary Ride 2012

As seen by Gary W.

I had been thinking through the week about how I was going to meet up with the boys at the Shepparton lake, you see, I was towing my bed for the first time and I did not know how I was going to make my u turn when leaving the lake. I know what I will do, I will go down a few back streets and park on the south side of the road and then I will not have to do a u turn. But what about the other riders lined up on the other side of the road. Well, I had better stick with tradition and just ride down to the lake and take it from there. I rode over the railroad crossing and looking for the other boys who should be parked at a nice place near the lake. There was no one there; Ron E and Gary B were parked on the south side of the road. It just goes to show, you must always expect the unexpected.

The three of us had a bit of a laugh and headed off, it was a great day for a ride and we were meeting up with Pinoclean Sid and Shifty Steve at Broadford. I was in my usual position at the back of the group and as we rode into Nagambie for our first wee spot, low and behold if the Posties son and his family pulled in just behind us. After a wee talk, we headed off to our next stop, the all night fuel stop just south of Seymour. All fuelled up and back on the road again we were. Just south of the Tallarook turn off I saw a bike do a u turn from the north bound lane and join us, it was no other than the next mayor of Tallarook, Lord Gaetan on his big black steed. That made four of us and when we rode into Broadford and met up with Sid and Steve, it looked like that was us, six of us.

Shifty handed all of us a ride map and we were on our way again. Down through Kilmore, Lancefield and on to Woodend where we met up with Castlemaine Ken on his Guzzi. We had a nice lunch break at the local bakery, coupled with a good coffee and a few laughs about one thing and another. The group, seven of us soldered on to Bacchus Marsh down through some of Shift’s camping grounds around Trentham. What a great ride plan Shifty had prepared for us, lots of rolling hills with the odd bend or two and just great countryside riding.
Just finished lunch at Woodend and getting ready to ride on.

.

We rolled into Bacchus Marsh with some time up our sleeves, had a stop and coffee in the main street and I ran into a nephew of mine and his wife from Bendigo as we were about to leave. We had around fifty odd ks to do before we hit Geelong and it was a good ride through more great countryside. We arrived at the little church meeting place of Geelong’s Chapter Six around 4pm.

The Geelong group put on a good feed before and after the meeting, a big thankyou to all the Geelong members involved looking after everyone. Geelong was booked out at all accommodation places and Andrew offered to put us all up at his home for the night. I thought that I overheard someone say that there were around fifty who attended the Geelong Chapter Six Meeting. Rod, Shane, and John joined us at Andrews for a bit of good reminiscing. I set up my bed that I towed behind the old reliable Kwakka and turned in at 10pm and everyone else did the same one by one up till midnight.

                                                        The Bed

I heard the sound of a Harley rider (Shifty) at 8am saying that it was time to get up Gaz, your brekkie is on the table. Shifty was concerned about how much shampoo and conditioner I had to use to wash my hair. I only had three bottles of each.

Andrew and Shane escorted us out of Geelong and rode with us to Bacchus Marsh. I lite up a smoke as we came into he Marsh and Shane rode up beside me with his arms waving all about, I wounder if he was getting sick of the smoke fumes drifting back over
him. I don’t think so. The same thing happened to me as we rode down the mountain one year and it was Frank from Omeo behind me, and he had to pass me also to get away from the smoke drifting over him. We had a brief stop at the Marsh and bid farewell to Andrew and Shane, thanking them for all they did for us and we were on our way again. We pulled up in Woodend for a light lunch, and it was there that I found a hat that liked me at the local market. We said good bye to Castlemaine Ken. The three remaining amigos rode on till we came to the Shepparton off ramp on the Hume and it was there, that we said good bye to Steve. Sid and Gaten made their way home after the Geelong Meeting. Mick Y from Numurka was also at the Geelong meeting and he had relatives to stay with.

What can I say? As far as I know everyone had a great time catching up with new and old members at Geelong. The ride there and back was one that I will remember, because it is another one of them things happening beyond my wildest dreams. They say that I am an older member now, well once I was young, brain and thought dead. I have been given the opportunity to meet some very wonderful people, who I can share part of my life with in an unconditional love for all.

       Thank You All. Gary W.

Over the Mountains Ride 2010

The Omeo Meeting – What it meant to me.
Peter H. (Lorne, Victoria)

For many members, the Omeo meeting was about a ride up the mountains and a camp in the hills. I have learnt in my time in Chapter Six that this was a long way from the truth.

We pulled up at the hospital entrance and several riders arranged their bikes outside the door. The sound of the big twins thundering at the entrance so late in the evening brought out a bewildered night duty nurse. Being a long weekend and a wet one at that, her first thoughts were to the safety of our group. Had one of our Chapter fallen on the lonely mountain roads that night?

In fact, we were here for the monthly Omeo Saturday night meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous and our gracious host Frank, was yet to arrive. The March meeting at Omeo has become our annual pilgrimage and part of the over the mountains run. Whilst several riders watched on, I followed in the footsteps of one of our co-founders Bill Wilson and asked the duty nurse if she had any patients suffering from alcoholism? You see friends, Chapter Six has a motto of ‘stand and deliver’, and on that windy, stormy night, we were doing just that.

In fact, the duty nurse did have a patient admitted for alcoholism and whilst she inquired of his capacity to attend our meeting, we set up the room and enjoyed some fellowship. Being sedated, our prospect was unable to attend the meeting and we have left some work for Frank. We also left a message for our sick friend, via nurse who had spoken to many recovered alcoholics interested in his welfare.

Riding home down the mountains my thoughts were of Bill Wilson and the early days of AA. Caught in a lonely place for a weekend on business, a nearby bar had beckoned him. Shocked by the temptation of alcohol, he had turned away and searched out a prospect in that small town of Acron, Ohio. It was through the hospital he found a man suffering from this disease that has killed so many, alcoholism. That man was a doctor and he became our cofounder.

So my friends, I wish to acknowledge all those who organised this ride over the mountains. My acknowledgment is written on the tank of Richard’s bike….
‘To all of you who are about to Rock.
I salute you.’

Peter H.
